The Great Canadian Bioblitz at Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary

Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary (SLNS) is partnering with Special Bird Service (SBS) and the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) to host a free two-day bioblitz event! This is part of the Great Canadian Bioblitz and is a perfect opportunity to explore your local environment, document the diverse species you encounter, and contribute valuable data to conservation efforts locally and across the country. 

 

This two-day event will be supplemented with free drop-in workshops to provide participants with the opportunity to further their learning on local ecosystems and ecological stewardship. These workshops will include:  

  • A how to guide on using iNaturalist led by local naturalist Burl Jantzen. Introducing folks to iNaturalist and exploring the diversity of the Nature Sanctuary. 

  • A guided bird walk led by Special Bird Service.

  • A Pond Dip on the Swan Lake Founders' Wharf led by Swan Lake staff, participants will learn about wetland ecosystems and the various creatures that live in the lake 

  • A guided nature journalling workshop led by Swan Lake staff.

Accessibility information: 

We aim to make the Nature House accessible to all individuals.  If you have specific accessibility accommodations or questions, please contact us (link embedded).  

 

Entrance and Facilities:

The Nature House entrance is equipped with an automatic door opener and is approximately 85 meters from the main parking lot on a gravel path.  

Inside the Nature House, there are two All Gender Universal Design washrooms and a water fountain with a water bottle filling station at the end of the hall.   

We do not have braille or auditory interpretation for our exhibits at this time. 

 

Accessible Parking:

There are two accessible parking spaces approximately 11 metres from the front door of the Nature House at the end of Swan Lake Rd. 

 

Accessible Drop-off and Pick-up:

An accessible drop-off and pick-up location is positioned 10 metres the right of the Nature House entrance and has space for one vehicle at a time. There is no parking at the drop-off/pick-up location.  

 

Service Dogs and Animals:

Certified service dogs (or service dogs in training) are permitted at the Nature Sanctuary, including the Nature House. Per Bylaw #7462, all other domestic animals are prohibited on site.
