Swan Lake Nature House event will start assembling at 11:45 AM.

There will be a short introduction to insects talk at 12:15 - 12:45PM with Cara Gibson.

Participants are welcome to tour the window collision abatement treatment exhibit in the Nature House.

Joachim Bertrands of Special Bird Service will be leading a local bird & ecology walk at 1:00 - 1:45 PM.

The World Migratory Bird Day theme this year: “Protect Bugs, Protect Birds.” 

This 2017 Science article talks about global insect declines and the common phenomenon of many motorists noticing fewer insects on their windshields and at research stations over the years.

"If you're an insect-eating bird living in that area, four-fifths of your food is gone in the last quarter-century, which is staggering," says Dave Goulson, an ecologist at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom studying insect abundances at a German nature reserve.

These insect declines of course have consequences for our feathered friends and this World Migratory Bird Day we must raise awareness to change this.

This program will take place indoors in the Classroom at the Nature House of 3873 Swan Lake Rd.

This is an approximately 3 min walk from the main parking lot on a gravel path. There are two accessible parking spaces nearer to the front door of the Nature House at the end of Swan Lake Rd. Inside the Nature House, there are two All Gender universal design washrooms and a water bottle filling fountain station.

 

For this event, there will be a lecture portion which will be seated, and a walk portion which will be on the grounds of the Nature Sanctuary.
